Grammar: COMPARATIVES (1º ESO)

Welcome again! How were your Easter holidays?

Today we are studying new grammar: the COMPARATIVES. We use comparatives to compare two objects, places or people.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT THERE ARE SHORT ADJECTIVES AND LONG ADJECTIVES.

SHORT ADJECTIVES  are those with one or two syllables ending in -y. Examples: 

hot (1 syllable)

cold (1 syllable)

easy (2 syllables ending in -y)

funny (2 syllables ending in -y)

Adjectives with 2 syllables (not ending in -y) or 3 or more syllables are LONG ADJECTIVES. Examples:

clever (2 syllables not ending in -y)

careful (2 syllables not ending in -y)

expensive (3 syllables)

invisible (4 syllables)

Cuando comparamos dos cosas, personas o lugares utilizamos la palabra THAN (que):

Natalia has got longer hair THAN Cynthia. (Natalia tiene el pelo más largo QUE Cynthia)
Pedro is more hard-working than Javier (Pedro es más trabajador QUE Javier).

Recuerda, para formar el comparativo añadimos -ER a los adjetivos cortos,  o decimos MORE delante de los adjetivos largos. Repasa el Grammar reference de la página 139 y realiza las actividades del libro de la página 69: 1, 2, 3 y 4 . Las 3 primeras las podrás realizar online, y la 4 deberás hacerla por escrito, escribiendo 6 oraciones en las que tendrás que compararte con algún compañero (usando los aspectos que ahí aparecen, por ejemplo: I'm older than Maria).
