Unit 5 (5º) At the department store

Here you are some activities and games to work on Unit 5... but first, remember:

HAVE TO y DON'T HAVE TO sirven para expresan obligación ("tener que/ no tener que"):

-I have to take rubber boots, because it's raining (Yo tengo que llevar botas de agua porque está lloviendo)

-We don't have to wear a school uniform (nosotros  no tenemos que llevar puesto uniforme)

Hasta ahora, sencillo. Lo que pasa es que tenemos que observar que cuando el sujeto es 3ª persona del singular (he, she, it o algún equivalente como Mary, my brother, the cat...) el verbo cambia por HAS TO / DOESN'T HAVE TO:

-My sister has to take rubber boots (mi hermana tiene que llevar botas de agua)
-Thomas doesn't have to wear a school uniform (Thomas no tiene que llevar uniforme)

Now, let's review the Past Simple in questions:

Past Simple of Regular verbs and To be

As you already know, the past of the verb To Be (ser/estar) has two forms: WAS and WERE.

The past of REGULAR VERBS finishes in -ed:

visit - visited

listen - listened

like - liked (*when the verb ends in -e, just add the 'd')

stop - stopped (*when the verb ends in CVC and strong syllable, double the final consonant)

cry - cried (*when the verb ends in consonant + Y, change 'y' for 'i')

Let's practice with some videos and interactive games:

👉Game 1

👉Game 2 (some are irregular verbs)

👉Game 3(there was/there were)

Homework Tuesday 2nd June (1º ESO)

Morning kids!
Let's star watching a video about the Past Simple. It's very important, so pay attention!

Así como acabas de ver, para formar la negativa e interrogativa utilizamos el auxiliar de pasado DID. En la negativa, DID+NOT= DIDN'T + verbo  infinitivo:
He watched a film last Saturday→ He didn't watch a film last Saturday.
They climbed a mountain two years ago→ They didn't climb a mountain two years ago.

In the QUESTIONS the order is different! En las preguntas, el orden sería:
DID + Subject+ verb infinitive?
Did Julia visit her grandparents on Thursday?
Did you study for the English test?
Now, let's go to page 83:
  • Read again the dialogue on page 82 and find the expressions in purple (Activity 4). Recuerda que esas expresiones temporales se suelen poner al final de las oraciones. ¿Qué significan las expresiones del recuadro (Activity 5)? Cópialas y tradúcelas en tu cuaderno.
  • Activities 6 and 7. First, complete the conversations with the listening and then write a similar dialogue. (Puedes ayudarte de las sugerencias o utilizar tus propias ideas).
  • Activities 1, 2, 3 and 4 (you can do them on Blink platform)
  • Do an interactive worksheet: click HERE . Cuando la acabes, haz click en TERMINADO, después en "comprobar mis respuestas" y hazle foto a la ficha con la nota para enviármela.

Homework Thursday 28th May (1º ESO)

Hi there!
Let's start our homework today:

  • Do activities 5, 6 and 7 on page 81. They are about the Past simple of Regular Verbs. In number 7 you must write sentences about you, but you can use TIME EXPRESSIONS like: Yesterday, in 2027, last weekend, 2 weeks ago...
  • On page 82, you can see Julia's grandparents (gran= abuela, grandad= abuelo).  Escucha el texto con atención 2 veces y observa estas dos oraciones:
I didn't visit you (no te visité)

He didn't phone me (él no me llamaba)
La palabra DID es un auxiliar de pasado. En este caso aparece negado: DID +NOT = DIDN'T. Observa que el verbo que aparece detrás ya no está en pasado, sino en infinitivo (didn' visit, didn't phone).
  • Make a list of verbs in the past from the dialogue. ¿Qué verbos puedes ver en pasado? Yo ya te he señalado los dos anteriores, aunque estén en forma negativa. Indica tú los demás.
  • Activities on page 82:
  1. Look at the photo. What things has Julia´s gran got?
  2. Answer the questions (complete answers!). Este vocabulario te puede ayudar: old letters (cartas viejas), phone box (cabina de teléfono), 2 miles away (a 2 millas de distancia), what a pain! (¡qué pena!)
  3. Esta actividad la vamos a cambiar, ya que no podemos leerla por grupos, vas a escuchar de nuevo el diálogo, parando a cada oración y repitiendo para intentar copiar el modelo correcto de pronunciación.
  • Let's play Quizizz! (Past of To be). Click on the picture:

Homework Tuesday 26th May (1º ESO)

Good morning!
Today, we are working on REGULAR VERBS. But... what are regular verbs? You must watch this easy video:

So, copy and remember:
In English, there are REGULAR and IRREGULAR VERBS:
➤Regular verbs: we add -ed to form the past simple.
Examples (de presente a pasado):
I visit my grandad➝ I visited my grandad (yesterday).
Samantha wants to be a teacher➝ Samantha wanted to be a teacher (when she was young)
➤Irregular verbs: the past simple is completely different (algunos ya sabéis que al final de vuestro libro existe una lista de verbos irregulares para estudiar la forma de todos ellos, pues no siguen la regla de añadir -ed).
Examples:
They go to university➝ They went to university (five years ago)
Charlie is my best friend➝ Charlie was my best friend (at school)
Hay algunas irregularidades a la hora de añadir -ed en los pasados regulares:
  1. Si el infinitivo ya acaba en -e, sólo añadimos -d: loved, liked
  2. Si el infinitivo acaba en consonante + y, se cambia ésta por i latina: studied, tried
  3. Si el infinitivo acaba en vocal + consonante y sílaba tónica, se duplica la consonante final: stopped, planned

We use some TIME EXPRESSIONS (usually at the end of sentences):

Yesterday (ayer)
Last year/Monday/weekend... (el año pasado/ el lunes pasado, el fin de semana pasado...)
one year ago/ three days ago... (hace un año/ hace 3 días...)
In 1965/the 1990s... (en 1965, en los 90...)
Después de copiar y estudiarte todo lo anterior sobre gramática, Vamos a hacer unas actividades: Activities 1 to 5 on page 81 about regular verbs and its pronunciation.

Homework Thursday 21st May (1º ESO)

Hi kids!
Today, you are going to watch a video to learn the grammar of this unit. Es un vídeo que he grabado yo, espero que lo entendáis mejor: CLICK HERE.
Hablando en pasado, podemos utilizar expresiones temporales como:
Yesterday (ayer)
Last year/Monday/weekend... (el año pasado/ el lunes pasado, el fin de semana pasado...)
one year ago/ three days ago... (hace un año/ hace 3 días...)
  • Now, your are going to copy and complete this table in your notebook:
  • Let's do some more activities now:

Homework Tuesday 19th May (1º ESO)

Morning kids!

Today we are going to learn the past of the verb TO BE. Como sabes, el verbo To Be significa ser o estar  y es un verbo irregular que funciona de forma distinta a otros verbos. El pasado de este verbo es muy sencillo porque sólo tiene dos formas: WAS / WERE. This is the past simple of To be, COPY IT IN YOUR NOTEBOOK:
¿Entiendes el significado? Yo era/estaba, tú eras/estabas....  En la forma negativa observad que aparece en rojo la contracción de NOT y en las preguntas, como siempre, se cambia el orden.
Now, let's watch these videos to learn the PAST of TO BE:

Now, play these games:

Tareas semana 11 - 15 mayo (5º)

Good morning kids!

Today We start watching a video about the Past Simple (video sobre el Pasado Simple). Espero que esto te ayude a tenerlo claro del todo:

Y vamos a trabajar las páginas 56 y 57 del libro para estudiar este verbo en la forma interrogativa y finalmente cantar la canción de la unidad. Os explico las actividades, que como sabéis podéis hacer en el mismo libro digital online:

  • 1. Read and say. Find the answers in the story (Debes rellenar las preguntas con las palabras que faltan y contestar las preguntas, que aparecen todas en la historia "The Mountain").
  • 2. Observa la tabla. Como hemos aprendido, en las preguntas en pasado utilizamos:
Did + Subject + Verb (infinitive)
Example: Did you listen to music? Yes, I did / No, I didn't.

En esta actividad deberás escribir 5 oraciones interrogativas fijándote en la tabla de gramática de la página 56 y contestarla de las dos formas posibles, como en el ejemplo que te he puesto en rojo.

  • Interactive game. Juega al juego interactivo que aparece junto a la tabla (ya sabes, el icono del mando de videoconsola), it's very funny!
  • 3. Ask and answer (pregunta y responde) looking at the pictures. Deberás utilizar los verbos que aparecen en el recuadro morado para hacer preguntas sobre cada uno de los personajes que aparecen dibujados. No tienes que usarlos en orden. Según el orden que tú elijas, la respuesta será una u otra (debes fijarte bien en los detalles de los dibujos).
  • Page 57: Watch the video and read the song. Primero puedes ver el video para posteriormente volver a escuchar la canción pero esta vez con el texto (Observa que aparecen las palabras del recuadro morado). Listen and read the song TWICE (dos veces) and COPY it in your notebook (cópiala en la libreta) junto con un dibujo del cantante de la banda que se describe en el texto de la canción. ¡Esfuérzate para que se entienda bien lo que lleva puesto!

Tareas de esta semana (5º)

Good morning kids!

You have got new homework. Las tareas que os pongo hoy son para una semana, así que debéis entragármelas antes del próximo martes. Aprovecho la ocasión para animar a aquéllos a los que les está costando ponerse a trabajar. This is difficult for everyone but we must take an effort!

Let's go with the homework:
  • ¿Recuerdas el Past Simple? (los verbos en pasado). Puedes repasarlos en tu libreta o tu libro, en Unit 4, y también con esta tabla. Cópiala en tu cuaderno y estúdiala bien:
DEBES RECORDAR QUE EL VERBO TO BE (ser, estar) TAMBIÉN ES IRREGULAR, Y SU PASADO ES WAS/WERE (he was my friend - he wasn't my friend - was he my friend?)
  • A continuación vas a rellenar esta tabla en tu cuaderno con oraciones en pasado (ayúdate de los ejemplos de la anterior. La primera te la doy hecha):
  • Now, let's do a WORKSHEET. Es una ficha para trabajar las preguntas en pasado. Descárgala AQUI para poder imprimirla o copiarla.
  • And finally, let's watch the story of Unit 5: The Mountain. En el libro digital (pág 54-55) podrás primero trabajar el vocabulario del recuadro morado, ver el video de la historia, y jugar a los juegos interactivos. Finalmente, vuelve a escuchar la historia esta vez con el listening, siguiendo el texto con la máxima atención.
